Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is personal. Every journey is unique.
When a nonspeaking person learns to spell, they aren’t just writing words—they’re unlocking their voice. Because this process looks different for everyone, comparing progress can be discouraging and even harmful.

- Everyone’s brain-body connection is different.
- Some spellers gain motor control quickly, while others need more time. There’s no single “right” pace, and honoring that is essential.
- Progress isn’t a straight line.
- Spellers may improve rapidly, then plateau, then leap forward again. These natural ups and downs are part of the journey.
- Comparison hurts confidence.
- When spellers feel “behind,” it creates stress for them, their families, and their CRPs. Confidence and trust are the foundation for growth.
- Everyone starts from a different place.
- Backgrounds, experiences, and support systems vary widely. Comparing one person’s journey to another’s doesn’t honor those differences.
- The goal is connection, not competition.
- S2C isn’t about spelling the fastest or saying the most—it’s about helping each person’s voice be heard and respected.
- Pressure slows progress.
- When spellers sense they’re being compared, stress rises and spelling becomes harder. Calm, patient support makes the biggest difference.
- S2C is a lifelong journey.
- There’s no finish line. Communication grows alongside emotional, academic, and personal development, at each person’s own pace.
- Most importantly, each voice is unique.
- Spelling to Communicate is about giving that voice space to emerge—in its own time, its own way.
Celebrate your wins, because every step forward matters—whether it’s spelling while staying regulated or forming a thought to spell later. These milestones are worth honoring, and so are the invisible wins that often go unnoticed. Much of a speller’s progress happens internally: building courage, trust, and body awareness. These quiet achievements are just as meaningful as the words on the board. At the heart of it all, S2C isn’t a race; it’s a journey rooted in patience, belief, and celebrating every milestone—big or small. Your speller’s voice is never “late.” It’s always right on time.
