Spellers & Allies Campaigns

Our Campaign Initiatives

Everyone deserves to be heard. By coming together as a group, we can amplify our message and create a powerful force for advocacy. I-ASC’s Spellers and Allies Advocacy Network has created four initiatives, Raise Expectations, Seek Justice, Improve Educational Outcomes, and Enhance Understanding. Each of these initiatives has been designed to advance communication access for all nonspeaking individuals. Under the umbrella of each of these initiatives, we will create campaigns designed to end communication discrimination and increase public awareness about the issues that spellers face in schools, employment, health care, and in the justice system.

RAISE EXPECTATIONS

Communication is accomplished with more than just speech. We provide information to raise the expectations and perceptions of how nonspeaking communication is delivered and perceived to those around us.

ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING

To achieve equality for the nonspeaking community, we dispel misconceptions by educating the speaking community about our challenges, facilitating open conversations to learn from us.

IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

We inform educators and professionals how S2C allows nonspeakers to communicate and participate positively in educational settings. It's important to understand the barriers we face, including lack of access to education, myths, and psychological distress caused by denial of education.

SEEK JUSTICE

We work to seek justice for all nonspeakers through campaigns designed to target thought leaders and organizations to facilitate an open line of communication, awareness, and understanding of the issues we face from those outside the nonspeaking community.

It was miraculous to meet and have allies. I had many speller friends before this group. But having allies was new for me. With them, I believe we can be the best team that will change things for all spellers.

Schedule a spellers & Allies presentation

I-ASC’s Spellers and Allies want to educate, inform and share with you the nonspeaking community. Our presentations are created by nonspeakers, spelling letter by letter on letterboards or keyboards. Our presentations address:

  • What does nonspeaking mean, who is nonspeaking, and how does it affect our lives?
  • Why can’t nonspeakers use their mouths to communicate? How do we communicate, and how did we learn to do it?
  • How are schools treating us?
  • What is the Spellers and Allies Advocacy Network?
  • How can you help us?

The presentation is online and lasts about an hour, including a Q&A session with our nonspeaking members.
