Julia, it really is an honor to interview you! Thanks to you and your mom & CRP Jennifer for meeting with me today. And congratulations on being nominated as an Ambassador during I-ASC’s Spelltember 2021!
My heart is full of gratitude for this opportunity!
What is the biggest unsung contribution that spellers bring to the world?
Autistics love immensely, I believe. Using love in this world is the key to truly seeing Autistics for the amazing human beings they are. If more people could see with their hearts instead of their minds, can you imagine what a world this would be?! One could gain a scientist who could cure diseases or a musician who has light in his beautiful mind. One could experience indescribable friendship where love is at the forefront. In a world, so conflicted, spellers are here. We will continue to spell, to write, to make our voices heard. For we are the change that is desperately needed.
Who inspires you and how do you want to inspire others?
My mom is my rock. She means the world to me. Autism is, without a doubt, a blessing and a curse. Her “can do it” motto motivates me and gives me light in the darkness. She always keeps it together. Love to be half the woman she is one day. My teacher, Susan, is another inspiration. Her quiet voice always calms me in life’s greatest storms. She really gets me and never tries to change who I am. Both ladies teach and inspire students daily. My hope is to one day teach others to use their voice for good. Using your voice is power no one can ever really take from you. Some may try. They will never succeed.
Julia, if you could interview someone you look up to, who would it be?
I would like to interview my Grandma Apps. Her life was most unique and extraordinary. (Jennifer shared that this was Julia’s great-grandmother.) She was the most patient, loving, mindful human being I have ever known. Words cannot properly reflect my love for her. Our moments were often quiet understandings. I really would like to speak with my grandma. Not her speaking TO me, but in my sweetest dreams—I am having a conversation WITH her. Her quiet strength motivated me to never give up. Miss her indescribably so much. I loved her smile. It was so welcoming to me. Hurts to talk about my grandma but so freeing at the same time. I could go on and on but would prefer to move to the next question.
What song lifts you up (figuratively and/ or literally)?
My most uplifting song would have to be Michael W. Smith’s version of All Is Well. Carrie Underwood makes it magical. My mind sees magnificent shades of gold. My heart speaks truth. Wish I could listen to it now.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
Always use my letter board to truly hear me. I sometimes speak unreliably and get misunderstood. Spelling is my voice and my freedom to live with independence, grace, and dignity. All I want others to know is I love immensely and using my spelled thoughts gives me great hope. I would love my heart to shine through always and for the world to see me for who I really am. I am God’s creation. I am His child. I am loved. I am indescribably capable of so much more than many believe I can do but I will never give up on my dreams. My mind is determined, and my spirit is stronger than my untrusting body. My supportive family is my rock. They will keep me on solid ground. I-ASC— you make this life worth living…for you use spellers to make this world more inclusive and more empathetic and heart stakeningly glorious. Time is coming. Time for change. I am beyond ready. I am all in. How about you?
*I want to thank you, Debbie. My words matter. Love that you have the heart to listen.
Julia Griffith is an advocate with an enormous heart. She speaks eloquently and sees far beyond her 13 years. Not only is she a beautiful writer, but she also has all the grit and determination of those who have been advocating for many years. Julia not only believes in herself, but she also has great hopes for all of humanity. In late December 2021, I had the opportunity to meet with Julia via Zoom and here is what we talked about.
