In 2021 when I was visiting VANCOUVER I saw an ASTOUNDING (means the feeling of great surprise) mural being painted on the side of a downtown building. I immediately knew I needed to know more about this FASCINATING artist. His name is JOE AVERAGE (born October 10, 1957), as BROCK DAVID TEBBUTT. Joe. When Joe was diagnosed with HIV/Aids (human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) he vowed to make his living from art. His joyful art, GENEROSITY and FLAMBOYANT presence DISTINGUISHES him as anything but average. Starting in the 80s Joe Average took an artists’s brush to his often grey rain soaked Vancouver and painted in TECHNICOLOUR. (using lots of BRIGHT COLOURS) HIS ART can be seen on banners, bridges, squares, meeting places.

Joe’s work has been described as “a visionary of colour, creativity, compassion” and has come to symbolize love and INCLUSIVITY. Over the years he has received numerous awards and honours, including civic merit awards, the GOVERNOR Generals CARING CANADIAN AWARD (1998) and the Queen’s Golden JUBILEE Medal for OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT (2002). In 2002, Major Philip Owen issued a civic PROCLAMATION designating November 3, 2002 as Joe Average Day.

Joe continues lending his art to many social and HUMANITARIAN causes in CANADA. The One World One Hope puzzle campaign is helping to fund Vancouver housing projects for PERFORMING ARTS communities. The project is operated by PAL Vancouver and operates an 11 unit complex in COAL HARBOUR. According to Joe “It fills my heart to think this artwork can serve another great cause by supporting the actors, singers, dancers, painters, sculptors and musicians in Vancouver and allowing them to live affordably.”
