I dedicate this to Tracey. She made me try new foods and I didn’t die.
I am a synesthete.
If you have not heard that term before, it’s only the coolest thing about me, and I am already pretty cool!
In my case, synesthesia means a joyful explosion of colors when I hear music. Not every type of music is pretty. The ones with strings are really shiny. Seeing music is one of my greatest pleasures in life. If I had a girlfriend, that might rank higher, though. It’s hard to say. Anyone interested in testing my theory?
The other way my synesthesia manifests is hearing with taste. Words are deliciously real. For example, NEW tastes fresh and cold. OLD is not a bad taste either. It’s hard to focus on the overall taste of a sentence. There’s too much going on.
One other way my senses overlap is I can feel emotions others have, so if someone gets angry, I get prickly skin, too. It’s hard to be in a crowd of crabby people. I love to be at my spelling lessons because it feels so smooth and happy. The best feeling, and no, she didn’t make me say that.
I have a unique taste. Foods are kind of shiny too, so frequently I feel great as they go down. The taste of chocolate is the best thing in the universe. Kind of like eating a star. That’s why I need it every day. You might ask if kissing ranks higher than eating chocolate. I’m not sure. Only time will tell.
I have too many things going on inside, so sometimes trying new foods can feel overwhelming. If the colors and taste clash it makes it really hard to eat. You have to try more food. Yes, it’s scary, but it has to be practiced like anything else. Mostly green foods taste harsh to me. Need to pick other colors. My favorite color is red. Got to try great combinations like the combo of peanut butter with chocolate chips cookies. Maybe chocolate with cookies. Celery is nasty. Maybe peanut soup.
Since I wrote that last week, I have changed my mind, and now I think celery is great when paired with chocolate nut butter. I will now move on to adventures like Mexicano mole. Wish me luck as I step outside my comfort zone.
