Tylar Buchling – Gentle Patience & Kindness

My first viewing of SpellX was in the South Africa salon, where I quickly felt the warmth of this bustling speller community an ocean away.  I nearly jumped out of my seat when I witnessed the riveting poetry of Tylar Buchling, the Spelltember Humanitarian award recipient that I was going to be interviewing for this blog only days later.  Check out Tylar’s collectible card here.

It was so much fun getting to know Tylar, who lives in South Africa. It turns out this is more than just a nice guy – he’s really funny too!  For our interview, Tylar was assisted by his beloved S2C Practitioner and speech-language pathologist, Tracy Gunn.

How are you today?

I AM GREAT. HAPPY TO MEET YOU.  WILLIAM’S (SPELLX) PRESENTATION WAS MY FAVOURITE.

That will be thrilling for him to hear.  He said all he cared about was making his nonspeaking friends laugh.

You are a recipient of the Humanitarian award.  Humanitarians are selected for their kindness, friendship, altruism, and generosity of spirit.  What do you think makes you a great Humanitarian?

I AM KIND TO EVERYONE I MEET.  I AM EVEN KIND TO PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND ME AND SAY MEAN THINGS.

S2C, Spelling to Communicate, nonspeaking, nonspeakers, Autism, I-ASC, Speller, nonverbal, RPM,That must take such great patience for you with other people.  The good thing is that people notice this about you.

Imagine a map of the world.  Where does your mind’s eye land and why?

I’D LOVE TO GO TO THE USA.  I LOVE DISNEY AND MARVEL COMICS.

If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into the room for the rest of your life, what would it be? S2C, Spelling to Communicate, nonspeaking, nonspeakers, Autism, I-ASC, Speller, nonverbal, RPM,

I’M NOT SURE MAYBE “SIMPLY THE BEST” BY TINA TURNER.

How would you describe yourself?

I AM A FUNNY MAN LIKE WILLIAM.

I think so too! Imagine if Simply the Best did come on every time you walked into the room, Tylar, that would be pretty funny!

If you could compare spelling to something that requires precision skills by neurotypical people, what would that be?

MIDDLE AGED PEOPLE USING TECHNOLOGY.

That’s very, very good and it’s also funny!  I hear your humour coming out!

What are you enjoying these days in life?

I LOVE HORSING AROUND WITH MY DAD AND MY BROTHER. I’M ALSO ENJOYING WRITING POETRY.

S2C, Spelling to Communicate, nonspeaking, nonspeakers, Autism, I-ASC, Speller, nonverbal, RPM,What do you wish for the world?

THAT PEOPLE WOULD RESPECT EACH OTHER MORE AND BE MORE ACCEPTING OF DIFFERENCES.

If you could interview anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

SO MANY OPTIONS BUT IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ROWAN ATKINSON. AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND OF COMEDY.

How did you feel about being chosen as a Spellebrity?

TOO HONOURED TO SAY. I HAVE SUCH LOYAL BELIEVERS IN MY LIFE.

South African spellers shone at SpellX. What do you have to say about your local community?

IT’S SO NICE TO HAVE FRIENDS ON THIS JOURNEY. I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR EACH PERSON.

What would you say are the top 3 ways spelling has affected your life?S2C, Spelling to Communicate, nonspeaking, nonspeakers, Autism, I-ASC, Speller, nonverbal, RPM,

I HAVE FRIENDS AND I AM GETTING AN EDUCATION BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY I’M FREE TO BE ME.

These words “free to be me” remind me of your incredible presentation at SpellX.

Your poetry at SpellX was so moving. How was the experience of presenting at an international event?

I WAS SO PROUD I CRIED. I AM SO GRATEFUL TO MY PARENTS FOR NEVER GIVING UP ON ME. LOVE YOU MAMMA EN PAPPA. AND TO TRACY WHO NEVER STOPS PUSHING ME TO BE BETTER AND BETTER. YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE. I LOVE YOU.

We love Tracy too!

It is a complete honour and a privilege for me to meet you, Tylar Buchling.  You know what I’ll be singing in my head every time I see you around the Spellerverse!

Tylar is known for his gentle patience and kindness. Friends describe him as kind and funny. Tylar is proud that he “sees the good in people even when they don’t understand me and make assumptions because I don’t speak well.”
