Solid, sustained spelling requires trust. The speller needs to trust that you are going to support their reliable communication, and you need to trust that you can do that, too! This presentation shares guidance for how to build trust through centering the speller in your mindset, practice, and application of spelling, including the exciting (but daunting) leap to open communication.

Tara Sayuri Whitty is also known as “Danny’s sister.” Her journey with S2C started in 2020 with her brother, Danny of Danny With Words, with whose encouragement she became a certified S2C practitioner in 2023. She works with spellers and their families in San Diego County and Temecula through her practice, Possibilities in Communication, which is heavily informed by her experiences as a family member to a speller. Besides S2C and supporting Danny’s empire, she continues to work in her original field: marine conservation research, training, and project evaluation.
